When Ballooning Leads to Line Dancing

When Ballooning Leads to Line Dancing

One of the best parts of ballooning is that you never know exactly where the flight will take you.

A hot air balloon flies with the wind, which means every flight is a little different. Some flights bring mountain views. Some bring beautiful reflections. Some bring curious neighbors, friendly landowners, or a landing that turns into a new local connection.

And every now and then, ballooning leads to line dancing.

A Balloon, a Wedding, and a Montana Memory

A couple of weeks ago, we landed near Holt Stage Hideaway in Kalispell, Montana, located near Highway 35 just off of Holt Stage Road.

There happened to be a wedding going on, so naturally, the balloon made for a pretty memorable surprise in the background. We joked that we did a little “wedding crashing”, Montana ballooning style.

Not the kind where you sneak in for cake.

More like the kind where a hot air balloon quietly shows up in the background and becomes part of the scenery.

We landed in a neighborhood a couple hundred yards away in a neighborhood street, but we could hear the party cheering from there. We have always known that you can plan the flight, check the weather, study the winds, and prepare the equipment, but you can never fully plan the moments that happen along the way.

Those are the memories that make each flight different.

Discovering Holt Stage Hideaway

Later, we got the chance to visit Holt Stage Hideaway in person.

It is always fun when a place you first noticed from the balloon becomes somewhere you later get to experience from the ground. We had seen the property during a flight and admired it for many years, but visiting in person gave us a better feel for the venue, the people, and the kind of local gathering place it is becoming.

We also had the chance to meet the wonderful owner, which made the visit even better.

That is something we have always loved about the Flathead Valley. It is not just the mountains, lakes, fields, and open skies. It is the people. The local businesses. The places that feel personal. The conversations that start because you showed up, said hello, and took the time to learn someone’s story.

Line Dancing in Kalispell

During our visit, Holt Stage Hideaway was hosting their very first Line Dancing event.

And of course, we had to join in.

After years of ballooning, traveling, events, and meeting people all over the place, we have learned that some of the best memories come from saying yes to something fun and unexpected.

Line dancing in Kalispell was one of those moments.

It was casual, welcoming, and full of that Montana community feeling we appreciate so much. People came out, music played, boots moved, and everyone had a good time. We are so happy to see so many young people out dancing, and can’t thank Big Sky Country Swing (@bigskycountryswing on instagram and Facebook) enough for teaching the lessons!

For us, it was another reminder that a trip to northwest Montana does not have to be only about the big name stops. Glacier National Park is incredible. Flathead Lake is beautiful. Whitefish and Bigfork are always worth visiting. But sometimes the places you remember most are the smaller local spots where you meet people, laugh a little, and feel connected to the valley.

Why We Love Local Places Like This

At 2 Fly Us, we spend a lot of time talking about the view from above and for good reason. A sunrise and sunset hot air balloon flight over the Flathead Valley is hard to beat.

But the view from the ground matters too. Places like Holt Stage Hideaway are part of what makes Kalispell and the surrounding area special. They give locals and visitors somewhere to gather, celebrate, dance, take photos, and make memories.

As balloonists, we get a unique perspective on the valley. We see the fields, roads, barns, homes, venues, and open spaces from above. But we also love getting to know the people and businesses that make this place what it is.

That is why this stop felt meaningful to us, because it was not just a venue. It was a reminder that Montana is built on community.

Explore More Than the Obvious Stops

If you are visiting northwest Montana this summer, we always encourage people to explore beyond the obvious itinerary. Yes, go see Glacier National Park if you can. Drive Going-to-the-Sun Road when conditions allow. Visit Flathead Lake. Spend time in Whitefish and Bigfork.

But also leave room for the unexpected.

Stop at local restaurants. Visit small businesses. Talk to people. Go to a local event. Try something you were not planning to do. You may end up line dancing in Kalispell, watching a balloon float over a wedding, or finding a new favorite local venue.

Those are the kinds of moments that turn a vacation into a story.

From Balloon Landings to Montana Memories

A balloon landing led to a connection. A connection led to a visit. A visit led to line dancing. And line dancing led to one more reason we love spending summers in the Flathead Valley.

If you see us flying over Kalispell, Whitefish, Bigfork, Flathead Lake, or Glacier Country this summer, give us a wave.

And if you see us out line dancing, wish us luck.
